Mountain blessings

I’ve only got a few moments to write this morning as we’ve just got home from a week away and I have a mountain of washing to conquer! And talking of mountains, I’ve been thinking a bit about some of the attributes of mountains (not the laundry sort) – they are general pretty big, huge, enormous in terms of size.  Mountains are substantial things, enduring, long-lasting…. they don’t just appear over night, they have been there for ages and will stand for ages to come. They are vast, solid, unshakable. Where we live on the south coast of England there are some lovely hills, the Sussex Downs. They are green and open and very pleasant for a walk, but I remember the first time I saw the Italian Alps I burst into to tears, overwhelmed by the scale of them.  Real mountains are breath-taking!

We read last week about the unique blessings that Jacob speaks over his sons before his death but when we get to Joseph’s blessing in Genesis 49:22-26 we read this;

“Joseph is a fruitful vine,
    a fruitful vine near a spring,
    whose branches climb over a wall.
 With bitterness archers attacked him;
    they shot at him with hostility.
 But his bow remained steady,
    his strong arms stayed limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,
    because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
because of your father’s God, who helps you,
    because of the Almighty, who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
    blessings of the deep springs below,
    blessings of the breast and womb.
 Your father’s blessings are greater
    than the blessings of the ancient mountains,
    than the bounty of the age-old hills.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
    on the brow of the prince among his brothers.”

I love how Jacob speaks of the blessing of God that has already been on Josephs life – even thought the path he has walked has been difficult, God has been his Shepherd and his Rock.  God has protected him and made him fruitful even in adversity. But Jacob doesn’t just stop there – he speaks his most lavish and extravagant blessing over Joseph. What an incredible image of blessing tumbling down from the skies like rain and bursting up from the deep like rivers making his life abundant and fruitful. He speaks about blessings of the womb and breast signifying healthy babies for his family and his flocks.  And then he talks about blessings greater than the blessings of ancient mountains meaning that Joseph would be blessed beyond his ancestors – that God would do more to bless him in his future than in all his history, or in the journey of his family before him.  Mountain blessings are big, huge, enormous.  Substantial, enduring, long-lasting.  Vast, solid and unshakable.

I’m going to go and get on with my mountainous laundry pile now but before I got I want to pray for each of you reading this to know God’s lavish, extravagant blessing pouring down and bursting up in your life, making you fruitful and giving you a firm foundation and a spectacular view.  May you know His unshakable peace today.

You will keep in perfect peace
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
    for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.

Isaiah 26:3-4

Thanks for reading. Love Rach x
