Seek and Find

I have recently watched ‘The War Room’. It is a great, if a little bit cheesy, Christian film. The two main characters use a closet (walk in wardrobe to us in the UK) to pray in. It becomes the place where they do business with GOD. They pray and seek Him in these non-windowed rooms.

I don’t know about you, but I think that having a specific place to go to meet with GOD is a great idea. Personally, I prefer to have natural light and a view since this helps me with perspective. Others of you might think those details would be a distraction. Either way, a place that is purposefully made for meeting with GOD is a great, if not an old idea.

Moses had a tent called the tent of meeting. It would be the place he would go to meet GOD. It was set up outside the camp some distance away. I guess the intentionality of going to the tent was a preparation to meet with GOD.

As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshipped, each at the entrance to their tent. 11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent. Exodus 33:9-11

I had not noticed, until I read this page with purpose, that Joshua stayed in the tent of meeting even after Moses had left. I have an inkling that he loved the presence of GOD. It is, after all, the place where we feel the most at home, most real and totally complete. We are designed for that place. GOD came to the place that Moses had set aside … and Joshua met with GOD there too.

A bit later …

18 Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’

19 And the Lord said, ‘I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,’ he said, ‘you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.’

21 Then the Lord said, ‘There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.’ Exodus 33:18-23

What an incredible encounter! This time, GOD takes Moses to the place He chooses. He allows Moses experience His glory. The glory of GOD reflects everything of Him. It is multi-hued, vast, powerful and beyond description. We are able to speak face to face with GOD as friends, only because we are hidden in Jesus – much like the cleft of rock that hid Moses.

I love those who love me,
and those who seek me find me. Proverbs 8:17

GOD can come to the place you have set aside for meeting with Him or you can meet with Him when He calls you to a new place. Whatever and wherever we are, when we seek after GOD, He will be found.
