I remember the days when my children were very little. My son, in particular, always wanted to know why. Why is the sky blue? Why is the moon out in the day? Why do cows make milk? Why …? He had a very inquisitive mind and I quite enjoyed explaining things to him. Of course, when he asked why he had to go to bed or why he couldn’t eat cake before dinner, he was never fully satisfied with the answer. He would never be content with ‘Just because I said so!’ … and neither would any of my children. Our natures want to know why or want to challenge the why.
We have reached the section in Job where the tables are turned and Job is questioned by GOD. If Job can give an answer, perhaps GOD will give an answer to Job.
Brace yourself like a man. I will question you, and you shall answer me. Job 38:3
What is it like to be questioned by GOD? Well, if Job’s experience is anything to go on, it is intense. How kind that GOD gives Job the warning to brace himself!
Question after question and detail after detail shows us GOD putting forward to Job the underlying question, ‘Who is able to be in control?’ As more questions continue to flow, both us and Job can see the complexity and authority that is needed for the world to function. The answer has to be that GOD is in control. GOD continues to ask Job about the finer details of the world around him. He shows Job and us that He reigns over the bigger things by knowing not just the general idea of what is happening, but by knowing the intimate details.
I often want details from GOD or want Him to tell me why … but do I have the right to know? No! He knows the world around me like a far superior David Attenborough and beyond the highly accomplished scientist. He is the one who designed it all before the beginning of time. He is sovereign and He has complete authority to either share His plan, wisdom or reason with me or not. We cannot behave like little children demanding that He tells us, throwing a tantrum when He says no or wait, stamping our feet when we don’t get an answer or slamming doors when His way is a bit of a mystery. I have done all of these things. GOD is GOD and I am under His authority … He does not have to answer to me.
But GOD doesn’t withhold from us because of malice. He isn’t a mean being, but a loving Father and He can be trusted. He knows the details of my life and yours. He is able to do more than you can imagine and sees the bigger picture so that all the details will come together.
26 ‘Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom
and spread its wings towards the south?
27 Does the eagle soar at your command
and build its nest on high?
28 It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night;
a rocky crag is its stronghold. Job 39:26-28
An eagle launches itself into the air and is held up by what appears to be nothing; it doesn’t sink to the ground. An eagle soars on unseen thermals … Trusting GOD is like that. The unseen thermals of GOD will carry us. The eagle soars at His command … let’s be imitators.
