We are family

Before our wonderful kids came along, my husband and I had the joy and privilege of travelling a little bit. We were part of a band that got to go and lead worship at churches and conferences in some very cool places.  My very favourite thing about this was that no matter where we went in the world we would always meet people who we instantly connected with and loved – who felt like family even though we’d only just met them.  And they still are to this day!

It has always been God’s plan for family be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. It was how it started with the first family. It is how it re-starts with Noah’s family.

“Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth”” Gen 9:1

This is how God does it – He takes family and blesses and multiplies them to make nations.

“…These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations.  From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.”Gen 10:32

We see it repeated in the New Testament too – the gospel transforms hearts and keeps on multiplying so the nations, that came from family, are becoming family once again.

While I was colouring my family tree globe I was praying blessing on my family who are in the nations. New Zealand and America and Iran and South Africa and Canada and Australia and Turkey and the Netherlands and Germany and….I could go on  (You know who you are).  It sometimes feels like a big world until you remember that He wants to fill it with family.

This morning I had coffee with a very dear friend who I haven’t seen for many years because she and her husband emigrated to New Zealand more than a decade ago.  There is so much to catch up on – kids and homes, passions and dreams, challenges and disappointments, jobs and church…. there has been a lot of water under the bridge since we last had coffee. As the years pass and their absence has become sort of “normal” –  life has, on many levels, filled up the gap they left in our lives – but even still our affection and sense of belonging never fades. When we are together it’s like she never left.

We have some other very precious friends who are family that are preparing to set out on an adventure to the nations soon – there is that bitter-sweet mix of excitement for them as they step into God’s plans for them, knowing that He will bless and multiply them so that the nations might become family, but at the same time grief – we will miss them because we love and belong. I am so glad that God always has and always will continue to bless us and multiply our family, and that His glory will cover the earth like the waters cover the sea!

“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, (Selah) that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. (Selah)  Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear him!”  Psalms‬ ‭67:1-7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God bless each of you. Thanks for reading. Much love Rach x
