A lot of people I’ve chatted to about bible art journaling find that the hardest part is getting started. Or even knowing where to start. I think to begin with I just picked one or two favourite passages and had a little go – to build a bit of confidence before jumping in to a whole book. Long term though both Katy and I think it is well worth working through books of the bible in their entirety because you get the context and flow of the story – and also find some pretty special treasures hidden where you least expect them that you would miss if you went for a “greatest hits” approach. If you are in this position of wanting to have a go at creating in your bible but not being quite sure where to start then can I suggest, in the words of Julie Andrews, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start!” Genesis is such a rich book full of stories that lay the foundation for our understanding of ourselves as human beings and of the God who made us. I know that Katy has already done a brilliant series of blogs on Genesis (see Genesis … Only the Beginning!) but I wanted to show you my journey too so that you can see how unique our processes are and so you can be encouraged that there isn’t a right or wrong approach – you are free to be you! It also demonstrates how God’s word is alive and He speaks to us uniquely. The truth is always true but the same passage looks different and applies specifically to different people and in different seasons. I hope you find it inspiring.
I remember the day that I did this page – it was a Sunday and I had been serving in the kids work at church in the morning. We had been making bracelets with an infinity symbol shaped charm on them which had involved a LOT of tying very tiny, fiddley knots! We chatted to the kids about the fact that God is infinite. The dictionary defines the word infinite as “Having no boundaries or limits; impossible to measure or calculate, Immeasurably great or large; boundless”. I love that! There was never a time when God wasn’t, He was already there – the Alpha, the source, the origin. He is not like us – He is not created but Creator, and yet we are like Him; created in His image. So here at the very beginning, before all things, we find God.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. And God said “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good…” Genesis 1:1-4
It never ceases to blow me away – God created all that we see, all that we know, by speaking. His voice gave the instruction and that was the very substance of life. He hasn’t changed and His voice hasn’t changed – He still speaks and His voice still creates! Whatever situation you find yourself in this week you can be confident that He is already there. His voice is still creating light where there is darkness and declaring life over the chaos. Everything He does is good! And not only that but we are made in His image and given a voice to speak life and light into the circumstances we face too. Isn’t that incredible?
Thanks for reading. By the way if you want to see Katy’s post on Genesis 1 then you can find it here; Creative Word
