“Draw near to GOD and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8
There is an old song which was probably written with this verse from James in mind. It has the lyric, “Draw close to me, as I draw close to you, I want to love you more and more my Lord.” This is at the heart of what we are hoping to do in this blog.
James declares a promise. If you are intentional about pursuing GOD, He rushes to draw near to you. Jesus has made a way so that we no longer receive judgement but mercy! We can have friendship with GOD.
“Let us then approach GOD’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
Why draw in your Bible???
Have you ever noticed that Bible speaks in pictures? Jesus himself told parables based on the things that could be seen around him. Pictures help us to understand, contemplate and remember truth.
We live in a literate culture, where we are used to expressing things with the written word, but our world is also full to the brim with other variations of creativity, just like its Maker. GOD has displayed His works so that we might know Him by the creation around us.
As valuable as discipline is, sometimes, reading your Bible can be hard work. GOD’s living and active word can feel like a chore rather than a joy. By purposefully engaging with His creativity, we can hear His voice and the way that He speaks to us personally. We no longer have to try to hear how someone else hears. GOD speaks our language too. GOD’s desire is for personal relationship, it is not second hand and we don’t need to go through a priest (or Bible study notes!). We have GOD’s spirit living in us and illuminating it in our hearts. The Creator sits next you as you study.
Bible art journaling has been life changing for us. The meditation on the page before us as we think about what we want to express takes time where we are soaking in truth and chewing over the word. The creative process allows space to not just rush on. When complete, we end up with a visual prompt of what GOD had spoken to us in that period of time and that part of our journey. This really helps us to remember … it sets up the stones (Old Testament reminder).
“The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.” Isaiah 58:11-12
